10 Feb 2016 Top Large Metros for Asian American Bachelor’s Degree Holders are Cincinnati, Austin, Raleigh; Most Improved are New Orleans, Cleveland, Richmond
Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which metros have the highest percentage of adults holding at least a bachelor’s degree. In a previous article, Headlight reported which large metros were host to the greatest percentage of educated men and women. In this article, we look at metros with the most educated adults within the Asian American population.
Bachelor’s degree holders constitute 52% of the U.S. Asian population 25 years and older (includes both non-Hispanic and Hispanic Asian Americans). Among large metros, the highest percentage of Asian American bachelor’s degree holders is found in Cincinnati (70.7%). Austin (69.9%), Raleigh (67.6%) and Hartford (67.3%) follow. Other large metros with a high share of bachelor’s holders for Asian Americans are Pittsburgh, Cleveland and St. Louis.
The lowest percentages of bachelor’s degree holders for Asian Americans in large metros are found in Providence (37.2%), Las Vegas (37.3%) and Grand Rapids (39.0%).
From 2009 to 2014, bachelor’s degree holders in the U.S. increased by 1.9 percentage points for Asian Americans. The large metros with the greatest increase are New Orleans (+9.9 pts.), Cleveland (+8.9 pts.) and Richmond (+8.1 pts.).
The least improved large metros for educated Asian Americans are Jacksonville (-11.3 pts.), Tucson (-8.6 pts.) and Birmingham (-7.1 pts.).
