Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which large metros are host to the greatest percentage of adults aged 70 or older.
Retirees constitute 9.3% of the U.S. population. Among large metros, the highest percentage of retirees is found in Tampa (12.9%). Pittsburgh (12.5%), Tucson (12.1%) and Miami (12.0%) follow. Other large metros with a high share of retirees are Buffalo, Cleveland and Providence.
The large metros with the lowest percentage of retirees are Austin (6.1%), Salt Lake City (6.3%) and Houston (6.3%). Raleigh, Dallas and Atlanta also have a low share of retirees compared to other large metros.
From 2009 to 2014, retirees’ share of the U.S. population increased by 0.3 percentage points. The large metros with the greatest 5-year increase in the percentage of retirees are Las Vegas (+1.6 pts.), Phoenix (+1.5 pts.) and Atlanta (+1.3 pts.).
Pittsburgh (-0.3 pts.), Buffalo (-0.1 pts.) and Oklahoma City (-0.1 pts.) had the greatest decrease in the percentage of retirees from 2009 to 2014. San Antonio and Orlando remained constant. The share of retirees increased for the rest of the large metros.
