Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which large metros are host to the greatest percentage of adults aged 50-69, commonly known as the Baby Boomer Generation.
Baby Boomers constitute 24.5% of the U.S. population. Among large metros, the highest percentage of baby boomers is found in Pittsburgh (28.3%). Cleveland (27.1%), Buffalo (26.9%) and Hartford (26.6%) follow. Other large metros with a high share of baby boomers are Tampa, Rochester and Detroit.
The large metros with the lowest percentage of baby boomers are Salt Lake City (18.9%), Austin (20.0%) and Houston (21.3%). Riverside, Dallas and San Antonio also have a low share of baby boomers compared to other large metros.
From 2009 to 2014, baby boomers’ share of the U.S. population increased by 2.3 percentage points. The large metros with the greatest 5-year increase in the percentage of baby boomers are Phoenix (+3.3 pts.), Charlotte (+3.2 pts.) and Dallas (+3.0). Raleigh and Tampa also increased at least 3 percentage points.
Salt Lake City (+1.4 pts.), Washington (+1.6 pts.) and Houston (+1.7 pts.) had the smallest increase in the percentage of baby boomers from 2009 to 2014. San Antonio and New York also increased less than 1.8 percentage points.
