Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which mid-sized metros are host to the greatest percentage of adults aged 35-49, commonly known as Generation X, Gen X or Gen Xers.

Gen Xers constitute 19.9% of the U.S. population. Among mid-sized metros, the highest percentage of gen xers is found in Bridgeport-CT (20.7%). Des Moines-IA (20.3%), Worcester-MA (20.1%) and Jackson-MS (20.0%) follow. Other mid-sized metros with a high share of gen xers are Boise City-ID, Greensboro-NC and Durham-NC.

The metros with the lowest percentage of gen xers are North Port-FL (15.7%), Deltona-FL (16.3%), Cape Coral-FL (16.4%) and Provo-UT (16.5%). Palm Bay-FL, Springfield-MA and Spokane-WA also have a low share of gen xers.

Gen Xers Mid Sized 2014

From 2009 to 2014, gen xers’ share of the U.S. population decreased by 1.1 percentage points. The mid-sized metros with the greatest 5-year increase in the percentage of gen xers are Provo-UT (+1.0 pts.), McAllen-TX (+0.7 pts.) and Ogden-UT (+0.6 pts.). The share of gen xers decreased for the other mid-sized metros.

Palm Bay-FL (-3.5 pts.), Worcester-MA (-3.5 pts.) and Springfield-MA (-3.4 pts.) had the greatest decrease from 2009 to 2014.  Colorado Springs-CO, Portland-ME and Syracuse-NY also rank in the bottom 10.
