Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which mid-sized metros have the highest percentage of adults holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

Bachelor’s degree holders constitute 30% of the U.S. population 25 years and older. Among mid-sized metros, the highest percentage of bachelor’s degree holders is found in Bridgeport-CT (46.7%). Durham-NC (44.8%), Madison-WI (44.7%) and Portland-ME (38.6%) follow. Other mid-sized metros with a high share of bachelor’s holders are Provo-UT, Colorado Springs-CO and Des Moines-IA.

For the first time in 2014, there are more women (30.2%) than men (29.9%) with a bachelor’s degree or higher in the U.S., as discussed in more detail in an accompanying article. Among men, the highest percentage of bachelor’s degree holders in mid-sized metros are found in Bridgeport-CT (47.8%), Madison-WI (44.4%) and Durham-NC (43.4%). The top three for women are Durham-NC (46.0%), Bridgeport-CT (45.8%) and Madison-WI (45.1%).

From 2009 to 2014, bachelor’s degree holders in the U.S. increased by 2.2 percentage points. The mid-sized metros with the greatest 5-year increase are Toledo-OH (+5.4 pts.), Portland-ME (+4.2 pts.) and Provo-UT (+3.8 pts.).

Women with bachelor’s degrees increased faster (+2.8 pts.) than men (+1.5 pts.) The most improved mid-sized metros for educated men are Toledo-OH (+4.8 pts.), North Port-FL (+3.3 pts.) and Madison-WI (+3.1 pts.). For women, the metros are Toledo-OH (+5.8 pts.), Provo-UT (+5.3 pts.) and Portland-ME (+5.3 pts).
