Counties Attracting Most Newcomers in 2014 are in Austin, Houston and Phoenix; Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami Lose Most

01 Jul 2016 Counties Attracting Most Newcomers in 2014 are in Austin, Houston and Phoenix; Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami Lose Most

Recently released data from the Internal Revenue Service illuminates which US counties have the highest county-to-county net household migration. Net household migration is total in-migrants minus out-migrants using the IRS-reported number of tax returns as a proxy for households. We exclude flows between counties in the same metro in order to estimate true relocations of households, not movement within a metro.

Among US counties, Travis County, TX (part of the Austin Metro) had the most household net relocations from outside the metro. The county gained 58,300 households in 2014, a remarkable 44,400 more households than the county in second place.

Harris County, TX (13,800 households), Maricopa County, AZ (10,400) and Clark County, NV (8,300) followed. Not surprisingly, 7 of the top 10 recipient counties are located in states without an income tax: Texas, Nevada, Washington  and Florida.

The counties losing the most households in 2014 were Los Angeles County, CA (-15,200 households) Cook County, IL (-11,400), and Miami-Dade County, FL (-6,100).
