Recently released data from the Internal Revenue Service illuminates which US counties are attracting the most gross income due to county-to-county net household migration. Net household migration is total in-migrants minus out-migrants using the IRS-reported number of tax returns as a proxy for households. Gross income is adjusted gross income earned in 2013 as reported to the IRS. We exclude flows between counties in the same metro in order to estimate true relocations of households, not movement within a metro.

Among US counties, Travis County, TX (part of the Austin metro) attracted the most gross income due to household migration from outside the metro: $1.7 billion. Palm Beach County, FL ($1.1 billion), Maricopa County, AZ ($0.8 billion) and Collier County, FL ($0.7 billion) followed.

Not surprisingly, 9 of the top 10 recipient counties are located in states without an income tax: Texas, Nevada, and Florida.

The counties losing the most gross income were Cook County, IL (-$1.3 billion), New York County, NY (-$1.3 billion) and Los Angeles County, CA (-$0.9 billion).
