Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey illuminates which mid-sized metros are host to the greatest percentage of adults aged 50-69, commonly known as the Baby Boomer Generation.

Baby Boomers constitute 24.5% of the U.S. population. Among mid-sized metros, the highest percentage of baby boomers is found in North Port-FL (30.4%). Palm Bay-FL (30.3%), Deltona-FL (30.0%) and Portland-ME (29.1%) follow. Other mid-sized metros with a high share of baby boomers are Cape Coral-FL, Youngstown-OH and Santa Rosa-CA.

The metros with the lowest percentage of baby boomers are Provo-UT (13.1%), McAllen-TX (16.5%), Ogden-UT (19.0%) and Bakersfield-CA (19.2%). El Paso-TX, Fresno-CA and Fayetteville-AR also have a low share of baby boomers.

From 2009 to 2014, baby boomers’ share of the U.S. population increased by 2.3 percentage points. The mid-sized metros with the greatest 5-year increase in the percentage of baby boomers are Palm Bay-FL (+4.4 pts.), Deltona-FL (+4.0 pts.) and North Port (+3.1). Albuquerque-NM, Worcester-MA and Portland-ME also increased by more than 3 percentage points.

Provo-UT (+0.6 pts.), Colorado Springs-CO (+0.9 pts.) and Bakersfield-CA (+1.1 pts.) had the smallest increase from 2009 to 2014.  Springfield-MA, Fayetteville-AR and El Paso-TX also rank in the bottom 10.
